Best MLB Bets for Second Half of Season

Futures: Division Winners

In June it appeared that five of the six divisions were in the control of the first-place team, but as we enter August, there are more races for division titles than we banked on. That’s great for late-season baseball.

The Yankees, Astros, and Dodgers are seemingly in the catbird’s seat in their divisions, but a few other races are worth examining for your MLB betting down the stretch:

Best Bet: Cleveland Guardians to win AL Central (+400)

Cleveland will add a bullpen arm and a bat at the trade deadline. The team has one of the best run producers in baseball in Jose Ramirez. I can see them leapfrogging the Twins and White Sox to sneak away with the division crown. A $50 bet gets you $200.

Futures: World Series Champion

BetMGM lists the three upper-tier teams as favorites to win the 2023 World Series:

  • Yankees +350
  • Dodgers +350
  • Astros +450

It’s likely at least one of those three teams will play in the Fall Classic, but as we’ve seen in recent seasons, any team can emerge from the postseason and snatch the crown. Wild Card teams have won the World Series four times in the last decade.

Here are odds on other likely playoff teams to win the World Series, from BetMGM:

  • Mets +700
  • Braves +900
  • Blue Jays +1400
  • Brewers +2000
  • Padres +2500
  • Rays +3000

If you want a longshot bet to throw $25 at, consider Tampa Bay. The Rays are always smart at the trade deadline, and they use their pitching as well as any team in baseball. The Rays are going to win a World Series in the next few years, with the talent they have in the front office and on the field. A $50 bet via BetMGM would win you $1,500 should Tampa Bay capture the Fall Classic in October.

Futures: American League Cy Young Award

The AL Cy Young race is so intriguing. Shane McClanahan is putting up great K/BB numbers with a minuscule ERA, but Justin Verlander is a horse, pitching deeper into games, and he’s got all those wins. If Houston wins 105 games or so, Verlander might win 22, which means the veteran will likely get his third Cy Young Award.

  • Shane McClanahan, TB: +125
  • Justin Verlander, HOU: +250
  • Dylan Cease, CWS: +800
  • Shohei Ohtani, LAA: +1000
  • Gerrit Cole, NYY: +1500
  • Alek Manoah, TOR: +1600
