Tennessee took a step in the right direction last season in Josh Heupel’s first year as head coach. But several things will need to improve to take the next step and go from being a good to a great team. The offensive line was solid in the run game last year but will need to be better when QB Hendon Hooker drops back to pass.

It would certainly help the defense if the offense could stay on the field a little longer; Tennessee ranked 130th in the nation last year in time of possession.

Ball State was not bad against the run last season but struggled in pass defense. On offense, the running backs are solid, and the offensive line does a decent job of run blocking. While likely starting quarterback Josh Paddock is familiar with the Cardinals’ system on offense, he lacks experience.

Betting Analysis

Ball State may keep it close in the first quarter, maybe even the first half. But the Vols have more talent and should blow the game open in the second half.

Our Pick: Under 68.5 points
