Tennessee Safety Arrested Following LSU Game

Tennessee safety Jaylen McCollough was arrested and charged with aggravated assault early Sunday afternoon following the Vols’ win over LSU, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the report, the victim accidentally entered McCollough’s apartment on Sunday afternoon. After the  realizing the mistake and apologizing, the victim turned to leave where McCollough followed him. The Vols safety punched him causing the victim to fall down the stairs.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel addressed the arrest during his Monday press conference without offering a resolution to the issue.

“No I don’t,” Heupel said on if he had an update on McCollough’s status. “We learned of it really late yesterday. As we gather more information I’ll have more for you.”

What’s next for Tennessee in resolving the situation? Heupel will work with others in the administration to conclude the situation.

“As they gather information, we’ll have a conversation based on the facts of it and then go from there,” Heupel said.

McCollough’s started 32 games in his four-year Tennessee career including the first five games of the 2022 season. The senior safety’s totaled 23 tackles this season.

Ohio State transfer Andre Turrentine and freshman Jourdan Thomas are listed as McCollough’s co-back ups on Tennessee’s depth chart while STAR Wesley Walker could also slide to safety to improve depth.

No. 6 Tennessee is preparing for its largest test of the season when it hosts No. 3 Alabama to Neyland Stadium Saturday afternoon. The eyes of college football are back on Knoxville with College Gameday returning to Tennessee for the second time in four weeks.

Kick off from Neyland Stadium is at 3:30 p.m. ET. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and Jenny Dell are on the call for CBS.
