Monday Night Football Preview: Los Angeles Chargers at Indianapolis Colts (+4.5)

Monday, Dec. 26 at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Radio

The Chargers (8-6) have been one of the better teams in the NFL since Thanksgiving, winning three of four to nudge their way into the AFC Playoff hierarchy. With two road games remaining, the Bolts will need to continue to play with urgency if they want to play extra football after the regular season ends.

The oddsmakers drawing a paycheck from DraftKings like the Chargers against the Colts, who go up and down more than a cryptocurrency stock. Last week it was way, way down for Indianapolis, as it blew a 33-point lead to the Vikings. Yes, really.

Still, we like how the Colts play under mid-season head coach replacement Jeff Saturday. Sure, the team is 1-4 under their new sideline general, but three of those L’s have come by less than a touchdown, and they have reason to be optimistic at home against Los Angeles.

Since Saturday took the helm, he has the Colts’ offense moving the football. In fact, Indy moves the football between the 20s better than any team before the half. Since Week 12, the Colts have run 32% of their offensive plays in the Red Zone in the first and second quarters. The NFL average is 10% of plays run in the Red Zone. Of course, the Colts need to find a way to get the football into the end zone, but that’s where the quarterback situation comes in.

Nick Foles will make his first start of the season for the Colts, replacing ho-hum Matt Ryan. Foles will bring a new approach against the Chargers on Monday. First, he’s more adept at making accurate downfield passes while moving than Ryan. Second, he should have the attention of his offensive playmakers. Let’s face it: the Colts players have no confidence in Ryan.

Want a few player props to consider for the Colts? Receiver Michael Pittman has delivered on the Total Receptions Over in 12 of his last 16 games, which means he’s productive and potentially profitable.

We expect the Chargers to get a win on the road, but the Colts will keep it close and pay on the 4.5-point spread from DraftKings.
