ESPN’s award-winning documentary series “30 for 30” is set to tackle the story of one of the greatest defensive football players in the history of the sport.

As announced by ESPN Press Room on Wednesday, ESPN Films is currently in production with a documentary titled “The Minister of Defense” – covering the career of NFL legend Reggie White.

“Told in part through never-before-seen footage from a 2004 interview filmed two months before his death, the film chronicles both White’s incredible dominance as one of the best defensive players ever and his spiritual journey as an ordained evangelical minister who questioned his blind faith toward the end of his life,” ESPN’s press release stated on Wednesday. “Along with interviews with teammates from both the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, the film features Reggie’s son Jeremy who embarks on a journey to understand his father’s life, which ended tragically short at the age of 43. ‘The Minister of Defense’ is a portrait of a man who constantly strived to ‘do right’ but found that sometimes there is no easy answer as to what ‘right’ means.”

The film will be directed by Ken Rodgers and Courtland Bragg.

Reggie White, from Chattanooga, Tennessee, played four years at the University of Tennessee from 1980 to 1983. White’s incredible senior season in 1983 saw him achieve an All-SEC selection, an All-America selection, and was named the SEC Player of the Year.

White’s 15-year career in the NFL was spent with Philadelphia and Green Bay before ending his career with Carolina in the year 2000. Over the span of that career, White became a Super Bowl champion, was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, an eight-time First-Team All-Pro selection, a 13-time Pro Bowl selection, and a two-time NFL sack leader.

Reggie White retired from the sport of football following the 2000 season. In December 2004, White passed away at the age of 43 years old.

  1. The greatest, most dominant football player on either side of the ball that I have ever witnessed in my 55 years. He used to regularly manhandle grown men opposite him.
