Tennessee-Southern Miss Enter Lightning Delay In Game One Of Hattiesburg Regional

UPDATE: Southern Miss has announced they are in ‘wait-and-see mode’ and will have another update shortly after 10 p.m. ET (9 p.m. CT) regarding the restart time.

Tennessee and Southern Miss are entering a weather delay at Pete Taylor Park in game one of the Hattiesburg Super Regionals.

The game entered a delay due to lightning at 3:17 p.m. CT and will last at least 30 minutes though poor weather is in the forecast all afternoon here in Hattiesburg. The latest lightning strike was at 3:59 p.m. CT so the game will be delayed until at least 4:29 p.m. CT.

Play finally resumed at 4:53 p.m. CT or 5:53 p.m. ET.

UPDATE: We’ve entered a second weather delay at 5:07 local time.

The matchup entered a delay with two-outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tennessee second baseman Christian Moore was in a 2-2 count with runners on first and second and two-outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

When play resumes it will be a very high-leverage situation as Tennessee looks to claw its way back into the game.

UPDATE at 6:40 p.m. ET: Tennessee is heading back to the team hotel as they wait for more news on the night.

Southern Miss leads the game one matchup 4-0 in the middle innings. The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the first inning via a Tate Parker two-out, two-RBI triple before adding a run in the third and fourth inning via solo home runs from Dustin Dickerson and Nick Monistere respectively.

Golden Eagles’ starter Billy Oldham was fantastic before the delay, retiring the first 10 batters he faced before Hunter Ensley’s one-out single in the fourth inning ended his perfect day.

The winner of the Hattiesburg Super Regional will advance to the College World Series in Omaha. Tennessee is looking for its first trip to the College World Series since 2021 and Southern Miss is looking for its first trip to Omaha since 2009.
