How Tennessee’s Opponents Fared in Week 4

Each week, Rocky Top Insider will take a look at how all 12 opponents on Tennessee’s 2023 schedule fared.

From Virginia to Vanderbilt, let’s take a look at how the Vols’ 2023 opponents in the fourth week of the college football season.

Week 1 Opponent: Virginia Cavaliers

Virginia lost a tightly contested contest at home against NC State, 24-21, last Friday night. Virginia is now 0-4 on the season in year two of the Tony Elliott era.

Week 2 Opponent: Austin Peay Governors

Austin Peay won a close game on the road against Stephen F. Austin, 22-20. The Governors improved to 2-2 on the season and have won two straight.

Week 3 Opponent: Florida Gators

Florida had a bit of a hangover after beating Tennessee, only beating Charlotte 22-7. Regardless, the Gators improved to 3-1 on the season.

Week 4 Opponent: UTSA Roadrunners

UTSA got blown out by Tennessee in Neyland, 45-14. Down their starting quarterback Frank Harris for a second consecutive week, the Roadrunners lost to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Week 5 Opponent: South Carolina Gamecocks

South Carolina picked up a solid 37-30 win over Mississippi State in Columbia. The Gamecocks used 10 fourth-quarter points to win the high-scoring affair and will look to carry teir momentum into Neyland Stadium next week against Tennessee.

South Carolina (2-2) and Tennessee (3-1) kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.

Week 6 Opponent: Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies dominated Auburn’s offense in Hugh Freeze’s first game back as an SEC head coach. 

Texas A&M won 27-10 in College Station to improve to 3-1. Tennessee hosts the Aggies in two weeks.

Week 7 Opponent: Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama was the best they’ve been all season in Week 4, using a great second-half performance to beat Ole Miss 24-10 in Tuscaloosa. The Tide are now 3-1 on the season.

Week 8 Opponent: Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky got their first SEC win of the season in Week 4, handling Vanderbilt 45-28 in Nashville. The Wildcats are one of three remaining undefeated SEC teams, along with Missouri and Georgia, at 4-0.

Week 9 Opponent: UConn Huskies

The disastrous start to UConn’s season continued with a 41-7 blowout loss to Duke at home. The Huskies are now 0-4 on the season and look like they are the worst team on Tennessee’s 2023 schedule.

Week 10 Opponent: Missouri Tigers

Missouri’s undefeated season continued with a 34-27 win over Memphis in Columbia. Starting QB Brady Cook continued his solid play, and the Tigers are now ranked No. 23 in the latest AP Poll.

Week 11 Opponent: Georgia Bulldogs

Georgia picked up a stress-free 49-21 win over Trent Dilfer’s UAB squad. The Bulldogs are now 4-0 and remain at No. 1 in the nation with Auburn on deck.

Week 12 Opponent: Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt lost their first SEC game to Kentucky in Nashville by 17. After a 2-0 start, the Commodores are now 2-3.
