These two teams have identical records at 5-2 but only Tennessee has a national ranking, with the Vols at No. 21. The bulletin board material is very prominent for the Wildcats. Having the same record and arguably the harder schedule. Kentucky has lost to No. 1 Georgia (no shame there) and to Missouri.

Meanwhile, Tennessee has losses to Alabama and Florida. The tension in the SEC is rising and it comes to a boiling point this Saturday in Lexington with Kentucky looking to save its season and Tennessee still dead set on climbing the national ranks to make it to the postseason.

Diving Deeper on Tennessee vs. Kentucky

Tennessee Volunteers: On the Road, On a Mission

Tennessee had a bitter end to an otherwise competitive game last week against Alabama. In the first quarter, the Vols had everything going their way and had 13-0 lead, effectively shutting down all of what Alabama coach Nick Saban and QB Jalen Milroe had to offer. Tennessee scored one more time in the second quarter for a 20-7 lead, but Alabama had an astounding response.

The Crimson Tide answered with 27 straight points. Tennessee QB Joe Milton had 271 passing yards, two touchdowns with 28 completions on 41 attempts. It was an impressive performance that was overshadowed by a late fumble that Alabama returned for a touchdown.

The Vols showed a lot in this game and have something to continue with. Despite the late mistake that put the game out of reach, Milton stepped up in a big way with how accurate he was of a passer. His 271 passing yards is an accomplishment against any top-10 team. The unfortunate part is that football is played for a full four quarters and Milton only threw for 96 yards in the second half with no touchdowns.

Tennessee can’t get complacent. Kentucky at home will be a challenge with these two teams so similar in talent. The Vols need to step up in the back half of games and limit the mistakes. Eight Tennessee penalties last week created opportunities for Alabama to pull ahead and if things don’t improve, another loss could be on the horizon for Tennessee.

Kentucky Wildcats: Motivated, Malicious,& Maddening

Kentucky has to be feeling a bit disrespected by the pollsters. Having lost to Georgia and Missouri should equate to a ranking in the 20’s but with a lot of teams doing so well outside the SEC, the AP poll reflects a different point.

Kentucky has had a couple disappointing games in the last three weeks. Starting with a loss to Georgia on the road and a loss to Missori at home a couple weeks ago, the Wildcats are looking to get out of their woes and get back into the win column. Quarterback Devin Leary logged two touchdowns and two interceptions with 120 passing yards and 14 completions on 27 attempts. If Kentucky wants to overthrow the powerhouse that is Tennessee, Leary will have to put up more yards through the air.

Even with a home field advantage, Tennessee will put up a fight anywhere. An average day of offense from the Wildcats will not be enough for a win. Tennessee has also had a penalty problem. The Vols have committed an incredible 27 penalties in the last three games, penalties create opportunities and Kentucky needs to be prepared to take advantage. Lastly, with the Wildcats coming off a bye week, expect them to be healthy and after a grueling two losses, you can’t put it past them that this additional down time has served them in a positive way.

Tennessee vs. Kentucky Prediction

FanDuel has the point spread at 3.5 points in favor of Tennessee. Even with Kentucky at home and fresh off a bye week, the two recent losses are not encouraging for the Wildcats. We believe in the Volunteers to come away with a win and that they win by more than 4 points. The Over/Under is set at 51.5 points and betting the Under in a close contest in this SEC contest is feeling more credible than not.
