Report: Key Tennessee Starter Not To Go Through Senior Day Against Vanderbilt

Tennessee center Cooper Mays doesn’t plan on going through Senior Day ceremonies during the Vols’ regular season finale against Vanderbilt, Off The Hook Sports reported.

The senior center isn’t sure whether or not he’ll return for his super senior season which COVID-19 provides but he’s not going through the ceremony like you’d expect a senior to do.

“I’m not doing senior day,” Mays told Off The Hook. “I’m not really sure on my plans just yet. I’ve got to work some stuff out.”

Mays has been a key piece in Tennessee’s offense and has served as the Vols’ starting center for all three years under head coach Josh Heupel. While he is unsure whether or not he’ll return next season, getting him back would be a huge win for Heupel and his staff.

The veteran Mays has dealt with injury issues during his career including earlier this season when he missed Tennessee’s first four games of the season before returning and boosting the Vols’ run game.

Tennessee has a number of seniors on this seasons team that could return for super senior seasons including an abundant of offensive linemen. Redshirt junior Gerald Mincey is Tennessee’s only starting offensive lineman that isn’t a senior. Starting right guard Javontez Spraggins is a senior but also has his COVID-19 eligibility year remaining. Left tackle John Campbell Jr also has one year of eligibility remaining.

Starting left guard Ollie Lane is out of eligibility after this season.

Tennessee football roster movement will begin next week after the conclusion of the regular season. But before that, the Vols conclude their 2023 regular season when they host Vanderbilt at Neyland Stadium. Kickoff between the Vols and Commodores is at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. SEC Network is broadcasting the game.
