Tennessee redshirt senior defensive back Warren Burrell is set to enter the transfer portal, according to a report from On3 Sports on Wednesday afternoon.

Burrell is the first Tennessee player who is known to be entering the transfer portal following the regular season.

The six-foot, 190-pound defensive back first came to Knoxville as a four-star recruit in 2018 from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia.

Burrell was quickly thrown into the action as a freshman during the 2019 season. The Georgia native started the Vols’ first four games of the season, played in nine games overall, and came up with 13 tackles during the course of his freshman season.

Burrell continued the action through his senior season in 2022 but was granted a medical redshirt after only playing in two games before suffering a season-ending surgery. Burrell made his return to the field as a redshirt senior during the 2023 season and played in every game this year except for the South Carolina and Texas A&M contests.

More from RTI: South Carolina Star WR Expected To Enter Transfer Portal

Burrell ends his season with eight total tackles, the lowest of his career, and one interception to go along with one pass deflection and one fumble recovery.

Burrell’s found his interception against UTSA this past September.

Overall, through the span of his five-year career on Rocky Top, Burrell finished with 41 games played, 91 total tackles, one interception, 10 pass deflections, and one fumble recovery.

While Warren Burrell is the first Tennessee player to enter the portal, he is certainly not the first from the Southeastern Conference. Six SEC quarterbacks have either entered the portal or have announced their intentions to enter including Ken Seals (Vanderbilt), AJ Swann (Vanderbilt), Max Johnson (Texas A&M), Will Rogers (Mississippi State), Max Brown (Florida), and Arkansas’ KJ Jefferson, though the last one might be a little more up in the air than the others.

Burrell will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Stay tuned to Rocky Top Insider for more transfer portal news throughout the month. The transfer portal will officially open up on Monday, December 4.
