Tennessee football has a handful of recruiting wins in the transfer portal so far this offseason including landing Tulane transfer Chris Brazzell II over Washington, Utah and Colorado.

Brazzell transferred to Tennessee after a breakout redshirt freshman season at Tulane where he caught 44 passes for 711 yards and five touchdowns. The Midland, Texas native’s play last season was good enough for him to land as one of the nation’s 75 best transfers according to ESPN.

ESPN pegged Brazzell as the 62nd best transfer and 15th best transfer receiver so far this offseason.

“The Vols will have a new quarterback in 2024, likely with Nico Iamaleava taking over as a first-time starter,” ESPN wrote. “Ensuring he has experienced, reliable receivers around him will help set him up for success, and Brazzell can fill that role. At 6-5, he gives the Vols a big target on the outside who can potentially cause matchup problems in the future. He’s a great addition for an offense that is built around its pass game.”

Like ESPN stated, Brazzell’s 6-foot-5 frame and high-level speed make him a strong candidate to start at wide receiver on the opposite side of Bru McCoy. The Tulane transfer won’t be without competition at the spot, however, with former Oregon transfer Dont’e Thornton expected to return and a number of other receivers competing for the job.

Brazzell is the only Tennessee commit who lands in ESPN’s 75-player list though Oregon State cornerback Jermod McCoy and Notre Dame tight end Holden Staes have been highly touted on other transfer portal rankings so far this offseason.

The Vols have lost 11 players to the transfer portal this offseason but none of them landed on ESPN’s list. However, Tyler Baron (Ole Miss), Tamarion McDonald (Ole Miss), Doneiko Slaughter (Arkansas) and Addison Nichols (Arkansas) all ended up at SEC schools.

The transfer portal officially closed Wednesday until the spring on though Tennessee players have until Saturday to inform the University of its intentions to transfer.
