After a strong run through the first two rounds of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, Creighton’s championship dreams faded away with a loss to 2-seed Tennessee in the Midwest Region’s Sweet 16 on Friday night in Detroit, Michigan.

While Tennessee didn’t have starting guard Santiago Vescovi for the game due to illness, the Vols’ depth and bench production gave them an added edge on the way to an 82-75 win over the Blue Jays.

Creighton guard Baylor Scheierman led all scorers with 25 points followed by Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht with 24 points. Blue Jays guard Steven Ashworth recorded 16 points while center Ryan Kalkbrenner scored 14 in the loss to the Volunteers.

Tennessee will now meet Purdue in the Elite Eight on Sunday in Detroit while Creighton ends the season with a 25-10 record overall.

After the game, Creighton head coach Greg McDermott met with the media to give his reaction to the loss. McDermott spoke about his respect for Rick Barnes, what Tennessee was able to do well, and broke down the performance of his team. McDermott was joined by Scheierman, Kalkbrenner, Ashworth, and Francisco Farabello.
