Five-star big man Chris Cenac cut his list of contenders from 12 to seven on Wednesday night and Tennessee basketball made the cut.

Cenac is now down to a top group that includes Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Houston, Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee as he works his way through a group of fall official visits.

Cenac ranks as a five-star recruit and the No. 8 player in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings. A 6-foot-10 big man, Cenac is a consensus top 10 recruit on every single recruiting site and is one of the Vols’ top targets in the 2025 recruiting cycle.

The blue-chip recruit officially visited Tennessee basketball last month for the same weekend that the football team hosted Kent State. Cenac has also taken official visits to Auburn, Kentucky and Houston this fall and he still has official visits scheduled to both Arkansas and LSU.

Cenac is a New Orleans native but he plays his prep basketball at Link Academy in Branson, Missouri. Tennessee has had an abundance of success recruiting Link Academy due in part to Tennessee assistant coach Rod Clark’s relationships at the school. Current Tennessee players Cam Carr, Felix Okpara and Cade Phillips all played prep basketball at Link Academy.

The 2025 recruiting class is a critical one for Tennessee basketball. Tennessee definitively has eight scholarships to work with this offseason. Tennessee’s current roster contains only 11 scholarship players meaning the Vols are two under the limit entering the season. Rick Barnes’ 10th team at Tennessee has six seniors on its roster including returners Zakai Zeigler, Jahmai Mashack and Jordan Gainey as well as incoming transfers Igor Milicic Jr (Charlotte), Darlinstone Dubar (Hofstra) and Chaz Lanier (North Florida).

With at least eight scholarships to work with this offseason, Tennessee will sign more high school prospects this cycle than they have in a number of years. The Vols last signed five recruits in the 2022 recruiting cycle and will likely be in that ballpark if not matching it in the 2025 cycle.

Tennessee basketball currently holds one commit in its 2025 recruiting class and it comes from four-star center DeWayne Brown. The Hoover, Alabama native committed to the Vols over Mississippi State back in April. Brown’s commitment gives Tennessee the No. 52 recruiting class in the 2025 recruiting cycle according to the 247sports team rankings.

The Vols are actively recruiting a number of other blue-chip recruits in the 2025 recruiting cycle. Five-star wing Caleb Wilson is officially visiting Tennessee this weekend while five-star wing Nate Ament is officially visiting the Vols for the Alabama game.

Tennessee is pursuing a number of four-star recruits well. Shooting guard Amari Evans has the Vols in his top three and is announcing his college commitment early next month. Four-star shooting guard Dante Allen also officially visited Tennessee earlier this fall.
