Tennessee football’s pursuit of a transfer receiver continues on Thursday as the Vols host Cal receiver Jonathan Brady on a visit according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Brady is a rising senior who spent his junior season at Cal where he caught 36 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns. Prior to his lone season at Cal, Brady played two seasons at New Mexico State with Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia.

The 5-foot-10 receiver was productive during both his seasons at New Mexico State but particularly in 2023 when he caught 38 passes for 624 yards and four touchdowns.

Brady earned a 62.4 PFF grade in 487 snaps during his junior season at Cal. By comparison, Brady’s grade would have been the third best amongst eligible Tennessee receivers. The Los Angeles native earned a 71.7 PFF grade at New Mexico State in 2023.

Tennessee football has been actively searching for a receiver in the transfer portal this spring due to the lack of depth and production in that room. The Vols lost four of their six top receivers from last season with two running out of eligibility and two transferring. Tennessee also lost depth pieces to the transfer portal.

The Vols return starter Chris Brazzell Jr and talented rising sophomore Mike Matthews. Tennessee’s only other returning scholarship receiver is redshirt freshman slot receiver Braylon Staley who projects as the starter in the slot.

Josh Heupel and his staff have added four receivers to the roster this offseason. Tennessee landed three prep recruits in four-star Travis Smith Jr, four-star Radarious Jackson and three-star Joakim Dodson. The Vols landed a transfer receiver in Alabama’s Amari Jefferson.

As Tennessee looks to make life easier for a new starting quarterback next season, adding receiving talent in the transfer portal would go a long way.
