Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes noted that he had already had an assistant in mind earlier this week after Volunteer assistant Rod Clark left for an assistant coach position at Indiana.
That proved true Friday when Barnes tabbed Amorrow Morgan as the newest assistant coach on Tennessee basketball’s staff, KnoxNews Mike Wilson first reported and a source confirmed to RTI.
Morgan spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Cal before joining Luke Loucks inaugural staff at Florida State early last month. But after a month in Tallahassee, Morgan is headed to Knoxville to join Barnes’ staff.
A Memphis native, Morgan graduated from Cordova High School in Memphis before playing a prep year in Olin, North Carolina just 43 miles from Barnes hometown of Hickory and 47 miles from Winston-Salem. Morgan played his college basketball at Idaho State from 2007-2010 where he twice earned All-Big Sky honors. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard’s senior season was his best with Morgan averaging 16.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Before his two seasons at Cal, Morgan spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Loyola-Chicago, three seasons at South Alabama and one season at Nicholls State. At South Alabama, Morgan spent two seasons at associate head coach while he also helped lead Loyola-Chicago to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
Morgan has a reputation of a relentless recruiter, helping Cal sign the No. 8 transfer portal class in 2023 and No. 12 transfer class in 2024. Morgan was a key part of Cal adding Jaylon Tyson, a first round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and Jeremiah Wilkinson, a Georgia native who was the ACC Sixth Man of the Year a season ago.
Rod Clark spent four years on staff at Tennessee helping the Vols land a number of key players most notably Dalton Knecht and Chaz Lanier.
Tennessee basketball’s roster is nearly set for the 2025-26 season. The Vols have 12 scholarship players on their roster at this point. Tennessee currently has just one scholarship to work with at the moment. It could become three scholarships if the House Settlement passes.
