Former Tennessee pitcher Garrett Crochet brushed off a batted ball to the face while on the mound on Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t square contact, but Crochet still remained on the mound while others may have checked out to the dugout.
The incident came on a 2-1 pitch in the top of the fourth inning with the Red Sox leading the Twins 3-1. Crochet delivered a sinker with empty bases, which was shot back up the middle by Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa. The ball made contact with Crochet’s nose as his head was turning, and then ricocheted to the second baseman, who made the play from the shortstop side of the second base bag.
Crochet finished the fourth inning, pitched a no-hit inning in the fifth with two walks, and was then relieved by Garrett Whitlock.
Crochet ended his day of work with four hits and one earned run in five innings on the mound, but the Twins were able to find four runs late in the game to take the 5-4 victory.
