Tennessee basketball has extended an offer to Marcus Spears Jr, one of the top recruits in the 2027 recruiting cycle according to 247sports Dushawn London.

Spears Jr is the son of legendary LSU defensive lineman and ESPN personality Marcus Spears as well as former WNBA player Aiysha Smith.

The son of the two legendary LSU athletes is a rising junior and a star recruit in the 2027 recruiting cycle. Spears Jr ranks as a five-star recruit and the No. 8 player in the cycle according to the 247sports composite rankings. A Dallas native, Spears also ranks as the No. 2 player in the state of Texas and the No. 3 power forward in the 2026 recruiting cycle.

The 6-foot-8, 195-pound forward is currently competing in the Team USA U19 tryouts while boasting offers from Indiana, LSU, Miami, Texas A&M and others as well as Tennessee.

Marcus Spears Sr. was a four-year standout at LSU where he helped the Tigers win the 2003 National Championship and earned First Team All-American honors in 2004. Spears totaled six sacks and 13 tackles for loss in his junior season before totaling nine sacks and 17 tackles for loss in his senior season.

Aiysha Smith was a 6-foot-2 center for the Tigers, earning First Team All-SEC honors in 2002 and Third Team All-SEC honors in 2003 before the Washington Mystics selected Smith with the seventh pick in the WNBA Draft.

Tennessee basketball has yet to land a commitment in the 2027 recruiting cycle but that is extremely unsurprising at this stage in the recruiting cycle. In fact, only one player in 247sports top 50 in the 2027 recruiting cycle has already announced their commitment.

Rick Barnes and his staff have their focus on the 2026 recruiting cycle while also continuing to evaluate potential options to potentially add to their roster for this upcoming season.
