Nate Ament is widely known as one of the top freshman prospects entering the college basketball scene this year. He was the No. 4-ranked prospect in the 2025 recruiting class and even projects as a Top 5 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

But before his freshman season begins in Knoxville, the 6-foot-9 wing is looking to sharpen another tool on his belt.

His golf swing.

In a wild and unexpected collaboration at the Reebok Golf Event this week in Dallas, Ament linked up with two-time U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau for a quick lesson on the range.

DeChambeau walks through a slice fix with the Vols’ rising freshman, giving a couple of tips on how to strike the back of the ball in order to get it where he wants to go. Who knows, maybe Ament even shared a few jump shot pointers after the cameras stopped rolling.

“Dude, he literally high-fived me, and I was like this right here,” DeChambeau, 6-foot-1 in his own right, said while stretching his hand as high as it could go.

Ament’s got plenty of time to get some golf rounds in this summer, but all roads lead to his first season on Rocky Top this fall.

Though still young, Ament’s addition to the Vols’ roster is already being looked at as one of the top needle-moving happenings of the offseason. Ament projects as an immediate impact player for the Vols and was recently profiled by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello in a Way-Too-Early power rankings.

“Ja’Kobi Gillespie was one of the best point guards in the portal, but Tennessee’s offensive improvement over the past two seasons has coincided with the Vols bringing in two high-level wings in Dalton Knecht and then Chaz Lanier,” Borzello wrote. “Can [Nate] Ament produce at that rate as a freshman? He’s a projected top-five pick in the 2026 NBA draft, and his size and shotmaking give him an incredibly high ceiling.”

Rocky Top Insider’s Ryan Schumpert shared his thoughts on Ament during the media’s first practice opportunity on campus this past June.

“One area Ament really impressed me was with his facilitating,” Schumpert wrote of Ament’s workout. “He got his teammates open shots or dunks multiple times on drives. He just plays so smooth and is not in a hurry. Very impressive trait for someone in his first weeks playing college basketball.”

Ament is a scorer, though. His versatility and vision make him look extremely comfortable on the court and can make something happen from all sorts of spots on the hardwood. He’ll be an exciting addition for the Tennessee fanbase to watch next season as the Vols look to make another tournament run.
