Tennessee athletics is honoring a number of legendary teams this weekend as part of “Champions Weekend” around the Vol football matchup against Arkansas.
One of the teams part of the festivities is the 1995 Tennessee baseball team— one of the best in program history. It’s the 30th anniversary of the 1995 season when Tennessee won the SEC Regular-Season and Tournament Championships that season, which earned them the Champions Weekend invite, and also made it to the College World Series.
It was Tennessee’s first trip to the College World Series in 44 years and the first of three trips to Omaha under head coach Rod Delmonico. This weekend provides a chance for Tennessee to honor one of its best teams in program history.
“Anytime you can have fellowship and get together as a team, especially when these guys have gone off and had families and various other events in their life, of course a guy like Todd Helton, is ultra busy during the season,” Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello said on SportsTalk earlier this week.” Guys might be able to go to a game and watch him play but don’t get to catch up with him in person. It’s just great to have events like this, I don’t want to say excuse, but reason for everyone to rally together. The fact that our guys get to see it, what their future holds or for our coaching staff to be tied to that celebrated team will be really fun.”

The 1995 Tennessee baseball team went 54-16 (22-8 SEC), knocking off Citadel, Georgia Tech and finally Oklahoma State to make the College World Series for just the second time in program history. Tennessee won the SEC Tournament each of the two seasons before and won the regular season in 1994 but had been unable to get over the bump in the NCAA Tournament.
Tennessee finally getting over the hump in 1995 helped set Delmonico’s program up for future success and two more trips to Omaha in the next decade.
The Vols earned wins over Clemson and Stanford in the College World Series but fell in the semifinals due to a pair of losses to eventual national champion Cal State Fullerton. Top players on Tennessee’s 1995 team included Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey.
This weekend’s reunion allows former Tennessee players to reconnect but also to see the progress at Lindsey Nelson Stadium as Vitello elevates the Volunteer program.
“It’s great because we’ve recently had a couple guys do that (come to campus),” Vitello said. ‘To see their facial expression when they see the construction— normally I would say it’s great in general. But particular to your question, this year, that construction is really fun to get guys feedback, see their reaction and also tour them a little bit.”
