Tennessee football star slot receiver Braylon Staley just re-signed with the Vols after a breakout redshirt-freshman campaign that saw him earn SEC Freshman of the Year. During this past 2025 season, he sported the number 14 as he left defensive backs in the dust en route to 837 yards and six touchdowns.
However, on Saturday, Staley teased a potential number change. He posted an edited photo of himself in the number six on his X account alongside a photo of him sporting the number in high school. The post was accompanied by a caption featuring eye-ball emojis and a question mark.
Staley also wore the number six during his recruiting visits to Tennessee for photoshoots. However, as a freshman, it was claimed by star running back Dylan Sampson and quarterback Joey Aguilar wore it this past season.

The number is now available, though, assuming Aguilar does not win his fight for eligibility. Staley is also surely toward the top of the list for claiming new numbers next season due to his production and third year inside the program.
Typically, Tennessee has players wear the same number as the year prior during spring ball and assigns numbers to incoming recruits and transfers for that period. Then, to start fall camp, players are able to change to their number of choice.
It’s not uncommon for younger players to get a number not very high on their list before making the switch later in their career, either. For instance, Mike Matthews, as a true freshman, wore number 10 before moving to four this past year. Sampson started as number 24 before his change to six. Ramel Keyton went from 80 to nine, as well.
