Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes reached a new career milestone after the Vols’ 86-85 overtime win over Georgia on Wednesday night in Athens. With the victory, Barnes has now notched 850 career wins under his belt. Barnes’ 850 wins are one behind Arkansas head coach John Calipari for the most among all active Division I coaches. The two longtime foes will go back and forth for the lead this season as the Vols and Razorbacks go through the season.

Barnes’ 850 career wins are also the ninth-most all-time (with a minimum of 10 years in Division I basketball).

While less to do with the winning column, Barnes also coached in his 1,279th career game on Wednesday night. That mark ties him with Jerry Slocum for the eighth-most of all time (minimum 10 years). Barnes passed legendary coach Bob Knight on the all-time games list after Tennessee’s win over Texas on Jan. 6.

Barnes racked up 20 wins during one season at George Mason, 108 wins during six seasons at Providence, 74 wins during four seasons at Clemson, 402 wins during 17 seasons at Texas, and now has 246 wins during his 11th season at Tennessee.

  • George Mason (1987-1988): 20 wins
  • Providence (1988-1994): 108 wins
  • Clemson (1994-1998): 74 wins
  • Texas (1998-2015): 402 wins
  • Tennessee (2015-present): 246 wins

Rick Barnes has reached 31 wins in a single season on two occasions in his career. He first hit the mark during the Longhorns’ 31-7 season in 2007-2008, and then hit it during Tennessee’s 31-6 season in 2018-2019. He’s also achieved 30 wins in a single season twice in his career, in the 2005-2006 season with Texas and the 2024-2025 season with Tennessee.

Tennessee still has 11 games on the regular season slate, plus the postseason contests with the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. Depending on how the Calipari and the Razorbacks wind up this season, Barnes could finish with the most wins among active coaches in the country by the end of the season.

Tennessee defeated Georgia by a score of 86-85 in overtime on Wednesday night to achieve Barnes’ 850th career victory. The Vols will return to action this weekend for a Saturday night matchup against Auburn in Knoxville.
