After a messy departure from Tennessee football, defensive back Boo Carter joined Colorado and Deion Sanders through the transfer portal for his upcoming junior season. He doesn’t plan to stay there long, though.
In a video posted by Darius Sanders, Carter explained that he hopes this is his only year in Boulder. The reason is he’s looking to take a step to the next level and join the NFL now that he’ll be draft eligible in 2027.
“It’s (my) third year,” Carter said. “I played my freshman year. New year, now. My third year, I’m tryna be one-and-done. I need to go to that league.”
While Carter is at Colorado, he’s hoping to leave his impact, though. While he’ll obviously need to play well to earn a spot in the NFL draft, he’s looking to impact the lockerroom, too.
This is for a team that went 3-9 (1-8 Big 12) a year ago and is looking to get back on track under Sanders.
“Just creating that bond, that brotherhood,” Carter said. “Knowing what my teammates can take and not take. We got some young guys coming in, some vets coming in, too, as well. Getting that bond and seeing what I can do to help them and see what they need help doing.”

Carter left Tennessee in the midst of his sophomore season with the Vols this past year. He was supposed to be a two-way piece for UT, playing both offense and defense, but was designated to just defensive back after not showing up for team activities during the summer.
In fall camp, Carter had to slowly work his way back into the team’s good graces before being cleared for action at the beginning of the season. However, he was the backup STAR on defense behind Jalen McMurray, playing about a third of the snaps at the position.
After only returning punts in Tennessee’s loss to Oklahoma, Carter was nowhere to be seen after a bye week against New Mexico State. After the game, Vols head coach Josh Heupel said that he did not meet the standard of the locker room and was no longer with the team.
Carter claimed he was confused after he was kicked off the team. He said that he told the staff that he was injured and couldn’t play, but the staff wanted him to play through it. Heupel retorted that, via the information brought to him by his trainers, he did not think it was necessary to list Carter on any availability reports.
On the 2025 season, Carter recorded 25 tackles, a sack and three forced fumbles. As a freshman in 2024, he posted 38 tackles, a sack and an interception.
