Former Tennessee wide receiver and current Seattle Seahawks running back Velus Jones Jr. has been designated as “active” for Super Bowl LX against the New England Patriots on Sunday night. The move comes one day after Jones was elevated from the Seahawks’ practice squad as the team prepared to make its final roster moves for the final game.
Jones began the season with the New Orleans Saints but was cut and picked up by the Seahawks in October. He appeared in three regular-season games for Seattle this season and played against the San Francisco 49ers in the Seahawks’ NFC divisional round win a few weeks ago. On the season, he’s got 10 carries for 42 yards.
Jones isn’t the only Tennessee representative in the final weekend of the season. VFL Joshua Dobbs is the backup to New England starter Drake Maye. He’s seen action in four games, throwing for 65 yards on 7-of-10 passing throughout the season. He’s also racked up 10 rushing yards on four attempts. Dobbs’ services haven’t been called upon all too often this season, but the Broncos’ playoff quarterback situation and the injury to Bo Nix are a reminder that anyone’s number could be called at any moment.

Jones spent two seasons as a wide receiver at Tennessee before being drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He racked up 22 receptions for 280 yards during his first season in Knoxville in 2020, but elevated his game during Josh Heupel’s first season at the helm. In 2021, Jones tallied 807 yards on 62 receptions with seven touchdowns. He also had 628 yards and one touchdown on kickoff returns. Jones went for 100+ receiving yards in games against South Carolina, Kentucky, and South Alabama.
The 2026 Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks will take place on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast by NBC.
