These Two Teams Have History
Tennessee and Wright State have faced off in recent years. Back in 2020, Wright State won a three-game series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. It was the last non conference series that Tennessee had lost before dropping two out of three games against Kent State.
Of course, Tennessee got revenge a year later when Drew Gilbert hit a walk-off grand slam to defeat the Raiders in the Knoxville Regional opener. The win propelled Tennessee to its first trip to the College World Series in 16 years.
Four years later, the memories still linger.@Vol_Baseball and Wright State meet again after their unforgettable battle in the 2021 Knoxville Regional – the one that ended with a Drew Gilbert walk-off grand slam.

What To Know About This Wright State Team
After making it to a regional —and eliminating Vanderbilt— a season ago, Wright State has gotten off to a slower start this season. The Raiders enter this weekend 4-6 and have faced a couple opponents that Tennessee has faced, or will face, this season.
Wright State dropped two out of three games against Georgia. They suffered blowout defeats in game one and game two before winning a tight game in the series finale. The Raiders blew out Kent State in a midweek matchup.
In its two other series, Wright State went winless against Charlotte and won two out of three games against Campbell. Pitching has been shaky for Wright State this weekend, especially in game one and game two of weekend series.
How Much Run Will Blake Grimmer and Garrett Wright Get This Weekend?
We saw Tennessee start just 10 players in the field while facing better competition last weekend in Arlington. But both Blake Grimmer and Garrett Wright are back from injury. Both projected to compete for a starting spot in the preseason and had nice debuts against Oakland earlier this week.
Grimmer looks like a bat that can change the dynamic of Tennessee’s offense. And Josh Elander has spoken very highly of him. Does he give him the trust as an everyday starter from the jump? Then what about Wright? How does he fit in while he is not yet healthy enough to catch?
How much each plays and how the perform are two of the biggest storylines I’ll be tracking this weekend.
