Tennessee baseball opened up SEC play over the weekend, dropping two of three games in the series at then-No. 9 Georgia. Combining the weekend series with Tennessee’s midweek win over Tennessee Tech made it a 2-2 week for the Vols.
Josh Elander’s first Tennessee team took the series opener at Georgia 7-4 after three Vols hit solo home runs in the game’s final innings. But Tennessee’s offense fell flat in game two as Georgia evened up the series with a 4-2 victory.
The Vols jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the series finale before a five-run seventh inning gave Georgia an 8-6 lead entering the eighth inning. Tennessee looked like it was about to take the lead with two outs in the top of the ninth inning before Cole Johnson robbed Stone Lawless of a go-ahead home run to secure the 8-7 victory.
It was a big weekend for a handful of Tennessee players at the plate. Manny Marin went six-for-13 at the plate with a home run and a double on his way to driving in five runs. Blake Grimmer reached base seven times with a pair of extra-base hits.
On the mound, Brandon Arvidson, Cameron Appenzeller and Bo Rhudy all turned in strong relief outings while the Vols had solid but not great starting pitching.
Tennessee baseball fell in various rankings after dropping its SEC opening series but they still remain ranked in all but one outlet’s top 25. Here’s a look at where the Vols land in this week’s rankings.
