Expectations are high for second-year offensive tackle David Sanders Jr. As he enters spring camp, he’s flipping to the left side of the line with the presumption he could play like one of the top linemen in the country.

Sanders noted that year one for him was a lot of putting on weight, getting adjusted to right tackle and learning the playbook. Now, he’s comfortable and more focused on the technical aspects of the position, which could take him to the next level.

Along with his own film, Sanders is also taking a peek at some NFL stars to see how they’re successful. One of these pros is Vols legend Trey Smith, who currently stars for the Kansas City Chiefs at guard. With Smith, Sanders has a personal relationship, as well.

“I like to watch Trey Smith, obviously, because he’s from Tennessee,” Sanders said. “I talk to him a lot. He actually just texted me like two days ago just checking on me seeing how spring ball is going. I like to watch Paris Johnson Jr., Tyron Smith, those are just two guys that remind me of the way I play a lot. Very athletic, quick on their feet. Not the heaviest guys, but super athletic, good with their hands. I just try to pick up things I can improve upon with my game, as well.”

The relationship between Sanders and Smith started during the recruiting process. However, after Sanders, a five-star prospect, committed and ultimately signed with the Vols, the contact between the pair increased.

Now, it’s a helpline for Sanders when he needs it. During the season when both are busy, the communication cuts down, but in the off-season, Smith does a good job of checking in on Sanders.

“I would say when he’s in the season, probably not as much if anything,” Sanders said. “But off-season, he talks to me a lot. Really just check-ins. I know I can call him anytime. He’s pretty much just there to be a mentor and a friend, as well. I feel like he’s very open to helping me with my process and helping before the season, as well. He’s a great guy.”

Sanders is projected to start at left tackle with no contest. Other returning starters include Sam Pendleton, Wendell Moe Jr. and Jesse Perry. The big question is just whether Perry will play tackle or guard, and if Ory Williams, an LSU transfer, will be ready to play right tackle.
