Tennessee football was linked to multiple big name quarterbacks in the transfer portal in January as they looked for a plug-and-play replacement for Joey Aguilar. Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby was one quarterback, at least briefly, linked to Tennessee in the portal before committing to Texas Tech.
It appears Tennessee may have dodged a bullet with Sorsby heading to West Texas. Sorsby attends to check into a gambling addiction treatment program amidst a NCAA investigation into his sports gambling activities, ESPN reported Monday.
According to Pete Thamel’s reporting, Sorsby placed thousands of online bets on a number of sports dating back to his time at Indiana.
It is unclear whether Sorsby bet on any of his own games but his eligibility is in jeopardy either way. According to NCAA bylaws, an athlete permanently loses his eligibility if they bet on games within their own athletic department. Betting on different schools in their own sport would lead to an athlete losing 50% of eligibility for a given season.

Thamel reported that Sorsby bet on Indiana football games while redshirting there during the 2022 football season.
Sorsby is coming off a redshirt junior season where he completed 207-of-336 passes for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. A true dual-threat quarterback, Sorsby ran for 580 yards and nine touchdowns last season as well.
A year after making the College Football Playoffs, Texas Tech again looked like a contender entering the 2026 season. If the NCAA deems Sorsby ineligible, it would be a major blow to the Red Raiders’ College Football Playoff hopes.
Unable to land Sorsby or Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt, Tennessee added Colorado quarterback Ryan Staub as a depth piece to its quarterback room. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon are battling for Tennessee’s starting quarterback position.

When ai first saw the headline of Sorsby going into gambling rehab, right away I said Tennessee dodged a bullet. First and foremost because of the greedy $5 million price tag. Now the gambling problem. It’s more widespread than this.
