This offseason, Tennessee basketball has loaded up on scoring through the transfer portal. Most recently, the Vols brought in Wake Forest transfer Juke Harris, considered the No. 1 player in the portal on On3.
Harris is one of seven incoming transfer signees to this point, all bringing their own flair of offensive firepower to Rick Barnes’ program. Naturally, that has resulted in high expectations for the upcoming season. Field of 68 co-owner Rob Dauster is on the hype train. During a recent show, he recounted a conversation with UT’s staff that shed light on their portal philosophy.
“The one thing that Barnes does, and I remember having a conversation with a member on his staff, probably, I think it was last year, and he basically said that they made a conscious switch about three years ago to focus more on bringing in scoring pop,” Dauster said. “Because of the ability that they have and their self-belief in their ability to teach defense and coach up defense and have guys buy in on that end.
“And that it’s easier to get guys that can score, that are high-major college basketball players and high-major athletes, and to get them to buy-in and learn on the defensive end than it is to take freak athletes and develop them as offensive players at this point in their career. I think that’s what we’re seeing with this group right now. I think the idea of putting Terrence Hill and Dai Dai Ames in the backcourt with Juke Harris and Jalen Haralson gives you as good of a one-two scoring punch in the backcourt—”

“There’s only one ball, but I’m not sure it’ll matter. If the biggest problem we’ve got with Rick Barnes’ offseason is accruing TOO much talent… it’s been a pretty good offseason” – @RobDauster

However, co-host Jeff Goodman cut off Dauster to make the observation that there is just one basketball. The point he was trying to make was that with so many high-level scorers on one roster, it could get tricky getting everyone touches.
Dauster responded by continuing his vote of confidence in Barnes’ roster construction.
“I don’t think it will matter,” Dauster continued. “I don’t think you’re going to see that four out there a ton. I think there’s going to be a lot of minutes where Tyler Lundblade plays because he’s a guy that doesn’t need the ball in his hands. If there’s a concern with this group, that’s probably what it is. But, hey, you know what, having too much talent—”
Goodman cut off Dauster, again, to explain why he thinks incoming VCU transfer point guard Terrence Hill Jr. is probably upset by the addition of Harris. However, Hill was fully aware that UT was recruiting Harris at the time of his signing and was peer recruiting the fellow guard to join him in Knoxville.
Vegas seems confident that Tennessee will have one of the better teams in the country, as well. FanDuel has Tennessee at +2500 to win the 2027 national championship. This is tied for the 10th-best odds in the nation.
