It’s largely been a banner year for the Vanderbilt athletic department. But the 2025-26 athletic year is coming to a close on a negative note for the Commodores. Vanderbilt baseball missed the 2026 NCAA Tournament marking the first time since 2004 that the Commodores have missed the tournament.
Vanderbilt posted a 33-25 (14-16 SEC) record during the 2026 season. Fourteen SEC wins is usually good enough to make the NCAA Tournament but Vanderbilt ranking No. 72 in RPI tanked their chances of making the tournament this season.
Why was Vanderbilt’s RPI so bad despite winning 14 regular season SEC games? There’s a handful of reasons. Eight losses in non conference play was a blow with Vanderbilt combining to go 1-5 in early season neutral site events. A number of Vanderbilt’s non conference matchups came against teams that hurt its RPI.
The Commodores also had an extremely easy SEC schedule. Vanderbilt did not play a number of top teams in the conference including Georgia, Auburn and Florida. But more notable than that, the Commodores played South Carolina, Missouri and LSU— the three worst teams in the conference.

The crowning moment of Vanderbilt’s season came at Tennessee’s expense when the Commodores swept the Vols with three straight walk-off wins in Nashville in late March.
Head coach Tim Corbin arrived at Vanderbilt in 2003 with the Commodores making the tournament just once in his first three seasons. But from there, Vanderbilt became one of the country’s best programs.
The Commodores had made the NCAA Tournament 22 straight years including trips to the College World Series in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2021. Vanderbilt won the national championship in both 2014 and 2019.
But since their loss in the College World Series final series in 2021, the Commodores’ program has undoubtedly began to slip. Vanderbilt has failed to win a regional since then. Last season, Vanderbilt failed to win the Nashville Regional as the No. 1 overall seed.
Twelve total SEC teams made the NCAA Tournament this season including Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Auburn and Alabama.
