One of Tennessee football’s commits in the 2027 class returned to Knoxville for an unofficial visit this weekend. Junior college defensive lineman Charles Mays got another look at his future school on Saturday.
This comes after Mays took an official visit to see the Vols on June 5 and quickly committed the following day. Since then, he has also taken an official visit to Auburn and Arkansas.
Mays seems locked in with UT, though. In his post announcing that he was returning to Rocky Top for a visit, he said it was ‘good to be back around my future coaches and teammates.’

Mays comes from Lakewood, Colorado, and currently plays for Northeast Mississippi CC. According to 247, he stands at 6-foot-5 and 340 pounds. He currently does not have a ranking on the site.
Mays’ primary recruiter at Tennessee is defensive line coach Rodney Garner. Throughout his storied coaching career, Garner has pumped out talent to the NFL on his defensive lines. In his career, he’s been willing to add junior college talent more than some other coaches, as well.
Currently, the Vols holds 16 commitments in the 2027 class. This features one other defensive lineman, four-star Kadin Fife. He is from Summerville, Georgia, where he plays for Chattooga High School. However, he committed to the previous defensive staff at UT (though Garner has been consistent throughout) and is someone to keep an eye on as UT fights to keep his commitment.
Overall, the class ranks as the No. 42 group in the country on 247. This weekend could be pivotal again to climb up the rankings, though.
