Tennessee baseball landed its fourth pitcher commit in the transfer portal earlier this week when Louisville’s Parker Detmers committed to Josh Elander and his staff ahead of his redshirt junior season.

At Tennessee, Detmers reunites with his former high school teammate Cam Appenzeller. The two played their high school baseball together at Glenwood High School in Illinois.

Detmers is two grades ahead of Appenzeller so there’s limited overlap together in high school. The Glenwood Titans posted a 27-5 record in 2023— Detmers’ senior and Appenzeller’s sophomore season— but failed to win the state championship with the season coming to a close with a 1-0 loss against Champaign Central High School.

The two both have a chance to be weekend starters for Tennessee during the 2027 season. Appenzeller is poised to step into a starting role after posting a 6-1 record, 4.76 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 56.2 innings pitched as a freshman.

Detmer’s role is a little less clear. The right-handed pitcher was the Saturday starter for Louisville in 2025, posting a 1-1 record, 3.94 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 16 innings pitched before undergoing season-ending Tommy John Surgery. Recovery from the arm surgery cost Detmers the entirety of the 2026 season.
