Tennessee Football is getting a superstar in the making with elite five-star running back David Gabriel Georges. The 2027 prospect is one of the top players in the nation and one of the top running backs in the nation, and has been widely discussed as a game-changing type of player for whichever program he landed with.
Fortunately for Josh Heupel and the Vols, that program is Tennessee after winning a hard-fought recruiting battle over Ohio State and Ole Miss.
Eric Westmoreland, a member of the Vols’ national championship team in 1998 and an assistant coach at Baylor School, has had the chance to see Gabriel Georges’ ability firsthand at the high school level. While speaking with WATE’s Sam Rothman after DGG’s commitment ceremony on Wednesday night, Westmoreland said that Gabriel Georges’ skill set reminds him of two legends in the sport.
“He’s a very elusive player,” Westmoreland said. “Kind of reminds me of Jamal Lewis, Adrian Peterson. He has a lot of wiggle to him, but he also has a lot of power also.”
Gabriel Georges was named a MaxPreps All-American during his junior season at Baylor School. He put together some monster performances on the field last year, including a 280-yard, three-touchdown showing against rival McCallie. He also had a game last season in which he rushed for 222 yards and four touchdowns against Rabun Gap.
Jamal Lewis is a Tennessee legend, and finished his UT career as the SEC Freshman of the Year (’97), a two-time Second Team All-SEC selection (’97, ’98), and a BCS National Champion (’98).

But while Gabriel Georges’ skill on the field sits at an extremely high level, Westmoreland also praised the five-star prospect for his demeanor off of it.
“He’s just genuine,” Westmoreland said about DGG’s personality. “He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around when it comes to just football mentality and things like that. How he eats, how he takes care of his body. You don’t see too many high school kids that do it the way he does.”
According to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings, Gabriel Georges ranks as the No. 10 player in the class, the No. 2 running back in the cycle, and the top player from the Volunteer State. He projects as an immediate impact player for the Vols when he arrives as a freshman in 2027.
“It’s great,” Westmoreland said on Wednesday. “Although you want to see a kid just go where he wants to go, you leave it all up to him, so I had no influence on that. He’s a great kid, comes from a great family, we’re just so proud of him here at Baylor.”
