There’s more than just blazing speed that goes into being a successful running back. However, it’s certainly a positive trait to be among the fastest at the position with the ability to hit the home run ball and leave defenders in the dust.
Tennessee football’s new five-star running back commit David Gabriel Georges is doing exactly that for Baylor School in Chattanooga. His speed looks like it’ll instantly translate to the next level, as well. In a post from May 1, 2026, he logged a 4.38 laser time and a max speed of 22.57 miles per hour at 220 pounds.
If you’re curious how that stacks up among top college running backs, it would’ve ranked fourth in the 2026 NFL Combine among running back participants. The only backs to record faster times were Arkansas’ Mike Washington Jr. (4.33), Notre Dame’s Jeremiah Love (4.36) and Wake Forest’s Demond Claiborne. Each of those athletes are years older than Gabriel Georges, though, who has the chance to improve his time by the time he gets to the combine.

Compared to Tennessee players, strength coach Derek Owings recently posted the top max speeds for the Vols during the summer. While players’ names are blacked out, the top speed was 22.6 mph. This is just faster than Gabriel Georges’ 22.57 mph, which would’ve already ranked second.
If you look at Gabriel Georges’ time compared to recent Tennessee running backs to get drafted, he’s already up to that high standard, as well. Dylan Sampson’s reported Pro Day 40-yard dash time was in the mid-4.40s. Jaylen Wright’s official time tied Gabriel Georges’ at 4.38 at the NFL Combine.
Gabriel Georges is more than just a speed back, too. He has the rare combination of strength and power to light up high school defenses at a level that many think it’ll be a quick transition to doing the same for the Vols in the SEC.
According to 247 Composite, Gabriel Georges is considered the No. 10 player in the class, No. 2 running back and the top player from the state of Tennessee. Though initially from Quebec, he currently lives in Chattanooga, where he plays for Baylor School.
