VFL Jauan Jennings is reportedly putting his foot down when it comes to the San Francisco 49ers.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jennings is looking for a change in the form of a trade or a new contract.
“49ers WR Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade, per sources,” Schefter posted to X on Monday morning. “49ers extended Jennings’ deal last year, but that does not change how Jennings feels about this year.”
In May 2024, Jennings signed a new two-year, $15.39 million contract extension with the 49ers.

Schefter’s report for ESPN reveals that “(Jennings) is not expected to be a training camp holdout, but he is not expected to be happy, either.” If Jennings doesn’t have a new contract by the time training camp starts next week, he “plans to request a trade to a team willing to pay him.”
There are a lot of ties to San Francisco wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk in this situation, too. Aiyuk put pressure on the 49ers during the 2024 offseason and ended up with a four-year, $120 million extension. But there’s also potentially leverage for Jennings here, with Aiyuk still recovering from a torn ACL and MCL that was suffered in late October last year.
Aiyuk’s injury could potentially sway the Niners to pay Jennings as a reliable receiver for newly extended quarterback Brock Purdy. Conversely, it could prompt San Francisco to move on from Jennings and turn to wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who caught 31 passes for 400 yards as a rookie, as an in-house replacement.
Schefter’s report also states that the 49ers “feel they have treated (Jennings) fairly” after the extension that was signed before the 2024 season.
This will certainly be an interesting situation to watch unfold this summer.
Jauan Jennings’ negotiation statement comes after a monster year for the former Tennessee product. The 6-foot-3 receiver tallied career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns during the 2024 season. He finished his 15-game slate with 77 receptions on 113 targets, 975 yards, and six touchdowns. Jennings’ previous career highs came at 35 receptions, 56 targets, 416 yards, and five touchdowns.
It was a substantial increase for a receiver who stepped up in the wake of the Niners’ offensive injuries.
What’s not seen on the stat sheet is his blocking ability. Jennings is regarded as one of the better blocking receivers in the league and has drawn praise from head coach Kyle Shanahan for his tenacious skills in San Fran’s run game.
Jauan Jennings is entering his fifth year in the National Football League this fall, all of which have been in San Francisco.
