As the waiting game continues with Tony Vitello and the San Fransisco Giants manager search, Tennessee baseball held a seven inning intrasquad scrimmage at Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Monday evening. Vitello was present for the entire practice and scrimmage.
It was a pretty one-sided seven inning scrimmage. Virginia transfer Evan Blanco was stout again on Monday afternoon, striking out the side in the first inning before allowing just three total baserunners in 3.1 innings of work. He’s been as impressive as any Tennessee pitcher I’ve watched this fall with his ability to get outs. His stuff and velocity is not overwhelming but he has been fantastic.
It was a rocky first inning for Tegan Kuhns thanks in part to a Blake Grimmer fielding error at third. But the Orange team tagged him for three runs in the first inning before adding another in the third inning when Ethan Moore laced a double to left field and scored on a Taylor Tracey single.
Those are two impressive freshmen for Tennessee. Moore flew out to the warning track in center later in the afternoon and had what I thought was one of the better days I’ve seen from him this fall. Tracey has been a pretty consistent force at the plate.
Rice two-way transfer Blaine Brown ran into the other bit of trouble on the mound. Chris Newstrom singled off him and Tyler Myatt walked before Henry Ford crushed a three-run opposite field homer. Ford had another stellar day at the plate, reaching ball all three times he came up to hit and driving in four runs. The Virginia transfer continues to look mostly solid while working at third base a good bit this fall.
It was also a two-hit day for Newstrom. Fellow sophomore Jay Abernathy reached base on a bunt single too.
It’s important to note that this was not a super formal scrimmage. Pitchers are on pitch counts, and each pitcher has designated innings to throw. With that, it’s on to the stats.
