After the firing of Brian Kelly, LSU football has named Frank Wilson as its interim head coach to finish out the 2025 season, according to Ross Dellenger. If that name sounds familiar, it may be because he spent one year in Knoxville as an assistant coach for Tennessee. In 2009, he was the wide receivers coach under Lane Kiffin.
However, when Kiffin left, so did Wilson. He moved over to LSU as the associate head coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator the following season. This was his first stint in Baton Rouge, which lasted from 2010-15.
The reason he left the Tigers’ program was an opportunity to be a head coach. He was the head man at UTSA from 2016-2019. He earned a 19-29 record and 13-19 mark in Conference USA play. After a 4-8 season, he was fired.
For the following 2020 season, he was hired by McNeese State. After 3-4 and 4-7 seasons, he resigned from the role.
In 2022, he joined Kelly as the associate head coach and running backs coach. He played for both Geneva and Nicholls State at the college level. He is from New Orleands, Louisiana, and is 51 years old. Wilson also holds experience coaching at Ole Miss and Southern Miss.

Kelly finished his tenure in Baton Rouge 34-14 (19-10 SEC). He won nine regular-season games in both 2022 and 2023, before only earning eight last year. His first season in 2022 did see his team make the SEC Championship game, which was a loss to Georgia.
Tennessee played Kelly’s Tigers team once in his tenure. The Vols went on the road in 2022 and dismantled LSU in a 40-13 win. Tiger fans exited the stadium quickly, leading to a total orange takeover of the stadium.
Kelly has a 297-109-2 overall record in his head coaching career, dating back to 1991 at Grand Valley State. He then went to Central Michigan in 2004 before landing at Cincinnati in 2006 and Notre Dame in 2010.
