Sam Leavitt, the Arizona State quarterback who led the Sun Devils to the College Football Playoffs in 2024, could wind up entering the transfer portal this winter. According to a report from On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong on Tuesday, Leavitt’s camp is “actively shopping the talented passer ‘at a high level’ to other programs with the plan of entering the transfer portal when the window opens on Jan. 2.”

Nakos and Wiltfong’s report also states that a return to Arizona State is “doubtful.”

Leavitt would be one of the biggest names in the cycle if he does indeed enter himself into the transfer portal when the window opens in the early days of 2026. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a bidding war break out for his services with teams represented from the four major college football conferences.

The 6-foot-2 quarterback from West Linn, OR, earned a redshirt during his first collegiate season at Michigan State in 2023. He then transferred to Arizona State before the 2024 season and wound up having an immediate impact with the Sun Devils. He threw for 2,885 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just six interceptions on his way to being named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year. Leavitt led Arizona State to a Big 12 conference championship and the College Football Playoffs, where his team would end up losing to Texas in the second round after a first-round bye.

Leavitt injured his foot during the Sun Devils’ Sept. 20 win over Baylor, which continued to linger into October. Arizona State then announced he would undergo season-ending surgery on Oct. 31 to address the injury. Up to that point, he had racked up 1,628 passing yards, 10 passing touchdowns, three interceptions, and five rushing touchdowns.

Arizona State enters the final stretch of the regular season with a 7-3 record, which is good for third in the Big 12. But with four teams ahead of them in the standings, it doesn’t appear that a return trip to the playoffs will be in play.

It’s important to note that Leavitt, nor his camp, has publicly made any moves yet. The report from Nakos and Wiltfong just states that his camp “actively shopping the talented passer ‘at a high level’ to other programs with the plan of entering the transfer portal when the window opens on Jan. 2.”

Tennessee, meanwhile, had its own transfer portal news break this week. On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos reported on Sunday that the Vols had parted ways with defensive back Boo Carter. The Chattanooga native is expected to enter the transfer portal when it opens up after spending his first two years on Rocky Top.
