Tennessee football is one of the remaining 10 schools in the mix for five-star linebacker Cooper Witten. Certainly helping the Vols’ chances, Witten is the son of NFL legend and former Vols star Jason Witten.
Cooper Witten is now deciding between Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas Tech, Georgia, Alabama and Texas A&M, according to Hayes Fawcett.
There’s no nepotism going on in Cooper Witten’s recruitment, either. He’s a fantastic player for Liberty Christian, where his dad coaches, in Argyle, Texas. He’s considered the No. 21 player in the 2027 class and a five-star by 247 composite. He’s the No. 1 linebacker and No. 4 player from the Lone Star state, as well.

More From RTI: Three Numbers to Know When Tennessee Football Plays Vanderbilt
“Athletic, physical, likely role-versatile second-level defensive piece who plays with a relentless motor,” 247 scouting analyst Gabe Brooks wrote. “Natural football IQ, awareness, instincts, etc. are obvious on tape and on the elite camp circuit. Produced outstanding combine testing numbers in Spring 2025. Owns a uniquely strong football pedigree. Wants the ball and plays for the ball, as evidenced by impact production through two varsity seasons. Also boasts the multi-phase participation and multi-sport athletic background so frequently seen in eventual NFL Draft candidates across the position spectrum, but especially in the defensive back seven.”
Cooper Witten has made it to UT’s campus numerous times so far in the recruiting process. This included a trip to Knoxville for Tennessee’s loss to Georgia earlier this season.
His father, Jason Witten, played at Tennessee from 2000-2002 before being selected with the 69th overall pick in the 3rd round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Cowboys. Out of Elizabethton, Tennessee, he was named a First-Team All-SEC player in 2002.
