Florida Football and new head coach Jon Sumrall look to be making a move on one of Tennessee’s class of 2027 committed players. According to a report from Rivals’ Chad Simmons on X, Florida hosted Tennessee cornerback commit Kamauri Whitfield over the weekend.
Sumrall and his crew appear to have made a strong impression on this trip.
“This visit definitely helped Florida,” Whitfield told Simmons.
While Whitfield is still committed to Tennessee, it’s clear that he’s still evaluating his options with so much time still left in the 2027 recruiting cycle. Whitfield originally committed to Tennessee back in October and was the second pledge to the Vols’ 2027 recruiting class.
What might help Florida in its pursuit to flip Whitfield is that he is a home-state prospect. Whitfield plays for The First Academy in Orlando, FL, which is less than two hours south of Gainesville and Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
On3 Sports’ Industry Rankings mark the 5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect as a three-star player. He’s also tabbed as the No. 511 player in the class, the No. 48 cornerback in the class, and the No. 46 player from The Sunshine State.

Prior to committing to Tennessee on Oct. 15, Whitfield held a bevy of Power 4 offers, including a number of teams from the SEC. In addition to both Tennessee and Florida, he also holds offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Illinois, Kentucky, Miami, Missouri, North Carolina, and Oklahoma, just to name a few. In total, he’s got 26 offers, according to 247Sports.
Tennessee reportedly extended Whitfield his scholarship offer while in Knoxville for a UT 7-on-7 tournament in June. He attended the Vols’ game against Arkansas in Neyland Stadium on Oct. 11, which was a 34-31 win for Tennessee, and committed to the program just four days later.
“From the work nobody saw to the moment everybody will – Tennessee, let’s work,” Whitfield wrote on social media in his commitment post.
Since the firing of Billy Napier and the upheaval of the Gators’ staff, former Tulane coach Jon Sumrall has completely retooled the coaches’ room in Gainesville. Part of that process was adding cornerbacks coach Brandon Harris, who came over from Central Florida. Tennessee has also made some big coaching changes this offseason, with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and secondary coach Anthony Poindexter coming in from Penn State and cornerbacks coach Michael Hunter Jr. coming over from Ohio State.
With Whitfield still in the mix, Tennessee currently has four commitments in its 2027 recruiting class. Whitfield is joined by four-star offensive tackle Princeton Uwaifo, four-star defensive lineman Kadin Fife, and three-star linebacker JP Peace.
