Tennessee football linebacker Arion Carter has made a decision on his future. After withdrawing from the NFL draft, he entered the transfer portal on Friday. Now, he’s decided to stay with the Vols for the upcoming season, according to On3.
Carter was forced to miss some time this past 2025 season due to turf toe, but still racked up 76 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 10 games. He was the starting weakside linebacker for the team when healthy, as well. On3 considered him a four-star transfer and the No. 8 linebacker in the portal cycle before he made the decision to return to UT.
Carter was also a key piece of Tennessee’s defense that was among the best in the country in 2024. His efforts, which included 68 tackles and a crucial interception of DJ Lagway vs. Florida, helped the team reach the playoffs.
As a freshman in 2023, Carter pushed his way into playing time but had his season cut short due to injury. He was a four-star recruit out of Smyra, Tennessee, and considered the No. 183 recruit in the country by 247.

Carter now joins a stacked linebacker room. The lone departure this offseason from the group was Brenden Anes, who didn’t play as a true freshman. It returns Edwin Spillman, who just re-signed with the program, along with the likes of Jeremiah Telander, Jadon Perlotte, Jaedon Harmon, Jordan Burns and Ben Bolton.
UT also brings in a transfer at the position. Out of Penn State, Amare Campbell committed and is now on campus. He has experience in Jim Knowles’ system, and could be pivotal in helping the defense adjust to his style of play.
Tennessee also has two very highly-rated freshmen signed and ready to join for spring ball. Both Brayden Rouse and TJ White were highly recruited four-stars who could make instant impacts.

Stacked! The only issue seems to be why Huepel can’t get any qb through the portal.
