Every Former Tennessee Vol To Play in the Super Bowl

Sunday evening’s Super Bowl LX matchup between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks will feature at least one former Tennessee player for the fourth straight season. The game will see VFL Joshua Dobbs, a backup quarterback with the New England Patriots, and VFL Velus Jones Jr., a backup running back with the Seattle Seahawks, aim to capture their first career Super Bowl rings.

Including Dobbs and Jones, Tennessee has now seen 76 former players in program history make it to the Super Bowl. The list starts with tight end Bill Anderson, a winner of the 1967 Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers, and goes all the way up to offensive lineman Trey Smith, who has competed in the event in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

With Smith’s trio of Super Bowls, he marks the 20th player in Tennessee history to play in multiple championship games. And out of those 20 players, four have been to the title game with more than one team:

• LB Jack Reynolds – 1980 Rams, 1982 and 1985 49ers
• WR Marcus Nash – 1999 Broncos and 2001 Ravens
• QB Peyton Manning – 2007 and 2010 Colts, 2014 and 2016 Broncos
• OT Chris Scott – 2011 Steelers, 2016 Panthers

According to Tennessee Athletics, UT has had 40 players combine for 50 Super Bowl rings in program history. The Volunteers had a representative in the first-ever Super Bowl in 1967 with Anderson, and also had championship representatives in 1971, 1972, 1977, 1979-1982, 1984-1986, and 1988-1990.
