Last week, reports surfaced that it was likely that Providence would be moving on from head coach Kim English. On Friday, March 13, it became official. The school announced they have agreed to part ways and will be conducting a national search.

“We appreciate Kim and his staff for their efforts over the past three seasons leading our men’s basketball team,” Providence College Athletic Director Steve Napolillo said. “We wish him and his family all the best in the future.”

English, a former Tennessee basketball assistant coach under Rick Barnes, finished this past season 15-18 (7-13 Big East). Over the course of his three years as the Friars’ head coach, he totalled a record of 46-49 (23-36). His team played in the NIT during his first season, but did not compete in a postseason event in year two or three.

Prior to his time at Providence, English coached two seasons at George Mason. His first season saw him finish 14-16 (7-9 A10). Then, he went 20-13 (11-7) while finishing fifth in the A10 before being hired by Providence.

English served as an assistant coach under Barnes at Tennessee from 2019-21. He replaced Rob Lanier, who left the Vols’ staff to take the head coaching job at Georgia State. Since then, Lanier coached at SMU, now Rice.

Barnes hired English after a stint at Colorado as an assistant coach from 2017-19. Before that, English was an assistant at Tusla from 2015-17.

English spent his playing days at Missouri, which was then a member of the Big 12. From his college career spanning from 2008-12, he earned a pair of Third-Team All-Big 12 honors and Big 12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

English was drafted 44th overall in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons. He appeared in 41 games as a rookie, averaging 2.9 points per game. He’d then spend a few years playing overseas before beginning his coaching career.
