Tennessee football is looking for its next quarterback, and one of the primary options is returning redshirt-freshman signal caller George MacIntyre. As he gears up for his second collegiate season, one primary question continues to be asked: How much muscle and weight has he gained?

After day two of spring practice for the Vols on Tuesday, the 6-foot-6 quarterback was asked where he’s at. He said since the time he arrived on campus a year ago, he’s gained 20 pounds. He arrived at about 180-182 pounds, and now weighed in at 202 the other day.

The staff is looking to continue to add to his frame, though. He was told the goal is to add as much weight as possible, but 210 was the target heading into fall camp.

While there’s still a bit to go to get MacIntyre into a playing size, he’s improved a lot in the strength category, according to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle.

“One thing, he’s gotten himself a lot physically stronger this offseason,” Halzle said. “You can see it in the way the ball is coming out of his hand. He’s done a great job with that. It’s something that he needs to keep pushing on.

“And then exactly like what you’re saying, and we tell our guys all the time, you got to treat yourself like the starter because you never know when that opportunity’s coming. And it’s true, there’s just a different animal when there’s now not a starter sitting in front of you and it’s wide open and you know, like, everything that I’ve worked for up to this point is now legitimately sitting right in front of my face. So there’s that different intensity, there’s that different kind of sense of urgency when he’s walking around the building.”

MacIntyre enters the quarterback battle as the only player with prior experience at UT. However, it was in a very limited capacity. He recorded pass attempts in two games, all with the score well out of hand and against lesser competition. He’s now battling true freshman Faizon Brandon and Colorado transfer Ryan Staub for the job.

  1. Don’t understand why they get these quarterbacks if there not good enough to play and don’t see why they would want to come here
