Tennessee’s yearly 865 Live recruiting event took place in Knoxville over the weekend, with the Vols hosting several elite prospects and highly valued targets on Rocky Top. One of those players was five-star defensive lineman Kellan Hall from the 2028 cycle.
The 6-foot-5, 275-pound lineman is one of the top-rated players in the entire class. Rivals’ recruiting rankings have him tagged as the No. 4 player in the class, the No. 1 defensive lineman in the class, and the No. 1 player from the state of Kentucky.
Tennessee’s recruiting event seems to have left a strong impression on Hall. While speaking with Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong after the weekend, Hall noted that he sees Tennessee’s program-wide desire to compete for championships, starting with the head coach.
“Coach Heupel has done a great job making sure the players have everything they need to compete for a National Championship,” Hall told Wiltfong.
Tennessee’s got a strong core going after the elite defensive lineman. In addition to Heupel, Tennessee also has one of the top respected defensive line coaches in the nation with a proven track record in Rodney Garner. But it’s two new coaches that caught the eye of Hall during his visit to Tennessee.
“[Heupel] hired Coach Knowles who has won a National Championship and added Coach Owings for strength, conditioning, and nutrition,” Hall told Wiltfong, via X. “He too won a National Championship with Indiana. These are exciting moves and are proof of what Coach Heup has been telling me from day one, ‘we are all in on winning a championship.'”

Tennessee’s hiring of Knowles and Owings, along with multiple other staff members such as co-DC Anthony Poindexter, LEOs coach AJ Jackson, and head nutritionist Katie O’Connor, has shown the Vols’ willingness to continue evolving this offseason. All have been big hires that didn’t come cheap, but Tennessee is committed to building a culture that can compete for championships in the future.
The Vols are hoping that the top-ranked defensive lineman in the 2028 class is part of that down the road.
“Talented two-way lineman at the high school level who projects as a high upside talent along the defensive front,” Rivals’ Charles Power wrote in an April evaluation for Hall. “Measured at 6-foot-4.5, 273 pounds at the Rivals Camp in Nashville prior to his junior season. Has a large frame that should easily carry 300+ pounds as he continues to physically mature. Tests as an elite athlete, consistently running the 40-yard dash in the 4.8 to 4.9 range at national camps. A dynamic two-way lineman on Friday nights.”
Tennessee isn’t the only team in the race by a long shot, though. The elite prospect also has offers from powerhouse programs such as Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Alabama, Miami, Georgia, Indiana, Texas Tech, and Michigan.
While UT is looking to lock down Hall for the 2028 class, Tennessee currently has eight commitments in the 2027 cycle. The Vols’ class includes four-star WR Kesean Bowman, four-star OT Princeton Uwaifo, four-star defensive lineman Kadin Fife, three-star safety Jaden Butler, three-star LB J.P. Peace, three-star quarterback Derrick Baker, three-star defensive back Brandon “Slim” Leavell, and three-star cornerback Carter Jamison.
