The collegiate sports landscape shifted on Monday afternoon with a significant court ruling regarding Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby.

Earlier this year, the NCAA deemed Sorsby ineligible for the season due to reportedly wagering around $90,000 on professional and collegiate sports while being presently involved in college sports. This includes a reported 40 bets on Indiana Football while he was a backup quarterback in Bloomington.

However, ESPN reported on Monday that Texas Tech football starting quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been granted his request for an injunction by a Lubbock County (TX) court, which will allow him to play in the upcoming 2026 season. He’s just suspended for the first two games of the season, both of which the Red Raiders are significant favorites in.

The news generated millions of impressions and interactions online in a short amount of time, with everyone from fans to analysts weighing in on the topic. There’s also been significant moves made by actual athletic departments.

According to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger on Monday, the University of Georgia and the University of Nebraska have “instructed their coaches and sport deputies not to schedule Texas Tech” in any sport until further notice. Additionally, “if games are already scheduled, the schools may work to cancel the matchups.”

The question now is whether this will begin a trickle-down effect with other programs across the nation doing the same.

The University of Tennessee men’s basketball team has a plausible possibility of facing Texas Tech on the court this fall. Both programs are part of the 16-team Players Era Tournament in Las Vegas, and there’s a chance that the Vols and Red Raiders could square off in the tournament semi-finals on Nov. 27. This matchup would require both teams to win their first two games in the bracket, but there’s a clear and obvious chance of this happening. It would also be the first SEC team that Tech would play against in the tournament.

It’s a tricky and tense situation around the college football world right now. According to several reports from high-ranking insiders on Monday, there seems to be significant frustration around the college football world from the news, but it’s obviously spinning off into other sports, too.

The last time that Tennessee played Texas Tech in men’s basketball was in December 2021, which resulted in a 5-point win for the Red Raiders in Madison Square Garden. You have to go all the way back to 1997 for the last meeting between the Vols and the Red Raiders on the gridiron, which resulted in a 52-17 win for Tennessee in Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee women’s basketball hasn’t played Texas Tech since 2009, while the Lady Vols softball program defeated the Red Raiders less than two weeks ago in the Women’s College World Series. That game came with its own separate controversy, though.

The college sports world is now on the edge of its seat to see how programs continue to address the Texas Tech situation after the statement moves that were made by Georgia and Nebraska on Monday.
