It’s been six years since former Vol pitchers Garrett Crochet and Chad Dallas shared the Tennessee uniform during the 2020 season. Over the last few days, though, the former roommates shared an MLB field for the first time in their careers.

Crochet was a pitcher in Knoxville from 2018 to 2020. He overlapped with Dallas for two seasons, who was at Tennessee from 2019 to 2021.

With Dallas’ Toronto Blue Jays visiting Crochet’s Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the two were able to meet up on the same playing field for the first time since their days in Knoxville.

Neither pitched during the series at historic Fenway Park in Boston. Crochet has been on the injured list since late April, while Dallas has gone back and forth between the big leagues and Triple-A ball this season. Dallas had one appearance for the Blue Jays this season, throwing 3.2 innings against the Atlanta Braves while allowing just two hits and one earned run.

On June 19, Toronto optioned Dallas back to Triple-A Buffalo.

Crochet was one of the best pitchers of the Tony Vitello era in Knoxville. In 36 appearances for the Vols, Crochet threw 132.0 innings with a 4.64 ERA. He tallied 149 strikeouts during his tenure. Crochet was named a First Team All-American in 2020, a Third Team All-American in 2020, and parlayed his success into the 11th overall pick of the 2020 MLB Draft.

Since arriving in the majors, Crochet has been a top-tier pitcher. He’s a two-time All-Star, a First Team All-MLB selection, the AL Comeback Player of the Year award winner in 2024, and the MLB Strikeout Leader in 2025.

Dallas, meanwhile, was a key figure on Tennessee’s 2021 roster. He started 17 games for the Vols, posting an 11-2 record with a 4.19 ERA. Dallas led the Vols with 122 strikeouts in 103 innings on the mound. He also started Tennessee’s opening game at the College World Series that season, striking out four Virginia batters in 6.1 innings. He was a key player in the Vols’ postseason run.

Dallas was selected by the Blue Jays in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
