Tennessee scored its most points against Alabama since 2003 Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It wasn’t enough, however, as the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide used a massive fourth quarter to earn a 52-24 win.

Big plays propelled Tennessee’s offense and helped keep them in the game into the fourth quarter.

Hendon Hooker— who was questionable entering Saturday— threw for three touchdowns including a 57-yard pass to JaVonta Payton and 70-yard pass to Cedric Tillman.

Third down conversions were the story of the game. Alabama converted on 15-of-20 third down attempts  while Tennessee converted just two-of-13, including a zero-of-six rate in the second half.

“I thought in the fourth quarter we just kind of wore out a little bit,” Heupel said. “That’s offensively not helping enough and staying on the field. You look at the third down conversion rate for us offensively— not nearly good enough, and then defensively just on the field too much.”

Heupel discussed the third down discrepancy, not going for it on fourth-and-one around midfield in the third quarter and the Vols’ bad fourth quarter.
