Five Most Underrated Players in Vols’ 2017 Signing Class

2. Matthew Butler, DT

If stats are your thing, defensive lineman Matthew Butler is your type of player.

Butler is a borderline three/four-star recruit depending on the recruiting service you look at, but his size and numbers stand out in a big way. Butler racked up a whopping 26.5 sacks and 44 tackles for loss as a senior at Garner High School in North Carolina. Butler totaled an eye-popping 100 tackles for loss in three seasons at Garner.

Butler was originally a big-bodied defensive end. But he’s already bulked up to 280 pounds on his 6-foot-4 frame, and he’s expected to slide inside to defensive tackle. Tennessee has injury issues and depth concerns at defensive tackle, so the opportunity over the next couple years is there for Butler.

As long as Butler can handle the additional weight and not let it drag down his play-making ability, he has a chance to play much better than his average three-star rating.
