Practice Notes: Vols Prepare for No. 3 Georgia

It was the same old song and dance on Tuesday afternoon as the Vols hit the practice field in preparation of No. 3 Georgia.

Much has been made of who will start at quarterback for Tennessee against the Bulldogs on Saturday due to Jarrett Guarantano’s poor performance to start the season. Head coach Jeremy Pruitt wasn’t willing to divulge his quarterback plans during his Monday press conference, but if the open portion of Tuesday’s practice is any indication, there won’t be a change to who starts at quarterback.

During the open portion of practice, Guarantano received the first rep while Brian Maurer was second, and JT Shrout was third. The quarterbacks also worked with the running backs on different forms of the option. During that drill, Maurer strictly worked with Ty Chandler.

Up front, Tennessee’s offensive line looked different as the group worked through drills. The first team lineup consisted of Wanya Morris at left tackle, Trey Smith at left guard, Brandon Kennedy at center, Riley Locklear at right guard and Darnell Wright at right tackle.

The second team offensive line consisted of Marcus Tatum at left tackle, Ryan Johnson at left guard, Jerome Carvin at center, Chris Akporoghene at right guard, and K’Rojhn Calbert at right tackle.

Last game against Florida, Wright started at guard but moved out to tackle after an injury caused the Vols to change things up a little. It looks like he could be moving to tackle after performing there against the Gators and at other times this season.

Defensively, the first team defensive line consisted of Aubrey Solomon, Greg Emerson, and Darrel Middleton. The linebacker room still remains extremely thin with just Daniel Bituli, Henry To’o To’o, Jeremy Banks, Solon Page, Aaron Beasley, and J.J. Peterson at inside linebacker. Banks and Peterson worked as the second team inside linebackers behind Bituli and To’o To’o.

In the secondary, Alontae Taylor worked in shorts.

Tennessee will hit the practice field tomorrow afternoon for the third time this week as it continues to prepare for Kirby Smart’s Bulldog squad.
