Tennessee Fans Show Outpouring of Love for Zakai Zeigler In No Time

The Tennessee Athletics department first posted the Go Fund Me for Vols guard Zakai Zeigler on Wednesday at 3:18 p.m. ET.

Thirty minutes later, the set goal of 50 thousand dollars had been hit. Tennessee fans were responding immediately to the Zeigler’s story and were showing their compassion with their wallets. Quickly into the evening, though, the fundraiser started to catch on around the sports world. And that’s when the number really started flying.

By 9:40 p.m. ET, the fundraiser was at more than 291 thousand dollars.

Tennessee Basketball: Zakai Zeigler’s Family Home Tragically Burned Down; Here’s What Rick Barnes Had to Say

“We have been absolutely blown away by the outpouring of support and generosity! Any contributions above and beyond our final losses/expenses will be donated to charity,” Zeigler responded on Wednesday night to the Go Fund Me. “Thank you to everyone who has given.”

The support and the kindness of the Tennessee fanbase have been on display since the news came down on Tuesday night. But, in a show of good sportsmanship and good morals, other fanbases in the SEC are rallying together in support of Zakai Zeigler and his family.

Love from #BBN (Big Blue Nation),” Kentucky fan Davis responded to the tweet from Tennessee Basketball. “I couldn’t give much, but it’s better than nothing. So sorry to hear about this. Best wishes to Zeigler and his family.”

Additionally, the fanbase from Arkansas, Tennessee’s opponent this coming Saturday on the court, has also joined in.

Even if the on-court and Twitter rivalries are strong, some things are bigger than sports,” OTHArkansas said on Twitter. “Help out if you can Razorback nation!”

But, with the connection that Zeigler has built with Vol Nation in the last few months, Tennessee’s fans have been the most vocal in support of their player. One of the cool features of Go Fund Me is the “Words of Support” section, a spot where users can comment words of encouragement to the organizer of the fundraiser – in this case, Tennessee guard Zakai Zeigler, his mother Charmane Zeigler, and his extended family.

Here are some of the best comments from the “Words of Support” section:

  1. This fire happened before the Arkansas game I think? If I’m right you are even more incredible than I thought. The way you came out and took command of the last couple of games was incredibly inspiring. Bless you and your entire family. I hope your house can be rebuilt from top to bottom. Anxious to see you Sat. in the last game before the tournaments. I am so sorry you’re facing this while trying to practice. Good luck and love to your family

  2. Great genuine heartfelt story – But i suspect some unscrupulous athletes will see dollar signs and stage such events to raise big bucks.
